Vein Treatment Procedure and Recovery
Sclerotherapy – Procedure
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosing agent directly into spider or varicose veins. A small gauge needle is used to perform the injections and most patients feel a slight stinging sensation. One treatment may involve numerous injections, depending on the size of the area to be treated. The typical procedure takes about 30 minutes.
Sclerotherapy – Recovery
The veins may be tender to touch after treatment with an uncomfortable sensation may run along the vein route. Bruising should be expected. Some patients will need to wear a support stocking following the treatment. Light exercise is recommended to increase blood flow.
Phlebectomy - Procedure
Phlebectomy is performed under local anesthesia. Tiny incisions are made in the leg to extract the vein with a phlebectomy hook. The vein is hooked and removed through the incision.
Phlebectomy – Recovery
Patients should keep their leg elevated for the first day and may resume normal activities within 24 hours. Strenuous activity is limited for 2 weeks. Soreness and bruising should be expected. Patients will need to wear a support stocking following the procedure.
Endovenous Laser Ablation - Procedure
A thin laser fiber is inserted into the diseased vein through a small puncture in the leg. Laser energy is delivered through a fiber which causes the vein to close as the fiber is gradually removed. The procedure may cause mild discomfort and takes 30 minutes to an hour. Patients will need to wear a compression stocking following the procedure.
Endovenous Laser Ablation – Recovery
Patients are encouraged to resume their normal actives following the procedure including light exercise. Minor soreness and bruising should be expected. Patients will need to wear a compression stocking following the procedure.
