SmartLipo Procedure and Recovery
The SmartLipo Procedure
Patients are put into a pre-operative room where photos will be taken and the surgeon will mark the areas of the body in which the surgery will be performed. Patients are then transferred to a surgical suite where they will be sedated. The surgeon with infiltrated the areas with local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, a small incision is made in the skin. Next a tiny cannula (tube) containing a laser fiber is inserted beneath the skin and gently moved back and forth delivering energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and become liquefied to the consistency of a slushy. The fluid released from the fat cells is absorbed and drained away by the lymphatic system. Patients who elect to have Power Assisted Liposuction will have the fluid gently suction away at no additional charge.
The Power Assisted Liposuction (PALs) involves the use of a vibrating cannula to gently suction away the liquefied fat. The cannula is inserted into the same small incisions used for the SmartLipo. A second round of SmartLipo may be used to further sculpt and blend the areas. Patients get the benefit of body sculpting and skin tightening from the SmartLipo, plus the immediate removal of fat deposits from the PALs. .
The SmartLipo laser energy also interacts with the dermis, resulting in tightening of the skin.
The laser coagulates blood vessels immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, and a quick recovery time.
SmartLipo Recovery
Patient will not be allowed to drive following the surgery and will need to be under the care of a responsible adult for the first 12 hours following surgery. Pain mediation will be prescribed to lessen any post operative discomfort.
Recovery times vary but most patients will begin to resume normal activity within 24 hours including light exercise. Patients who have Power Assisted Liposuction will experience a slightly longer recovery time. Patients should gradually increase activity, including exercise, as tolerated over the next one to two weeks.
A complete list of pre and post operative instructions will be given to the patient at the pre operative visit. Patients will also have a pre operative phone review 1-3 days prior to the surgery.
