Breast Augmentation FAQs

What size and type of implant will be used?

There are two primary types of implants to we use – saline and silicone filled implants. The size and type of breast implant recommended for you will be determined by the size of your body frame, body mass, existing breast tissue, and your personal preferences.

What about the style of the implant?

The most common style of implant that our patients select is the high profile implant because it projects the furthest from the body. Patients can also choose the moderate profile implant which is more flat and wider than the high profile implant. The low profile implant is very flat and wide.

What about implant placement options?

Placement options include subglandular (above the fascia but under the breast tissue), under the muscle, and under the fascia but on top of the muscle. The placement of the implant will be based on the surgeon’s recommendation and your personal preference.

What about incision locations?

Whenever possible the incision will be placed at the transaxillary (armpit crease) because the scar is the least detectable. Other options include the incision at the inframamary fold (under the breast fold) and at the pareola (around the nipple). The placement of the incision will be based on the surgeon’s recommendation and your personal preference.

How long does the surgery take?

Breast augmentation takes 1-2 hours to complete. Plan to be in the office for 3-4 hours.

What type of anesthesia is used?

All breast surgeries will be performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation. No general anesthesia is used.

Where is the surgery performed?

Breast surgeries are performed at our office in a surgical suite.

Is breast augmentation surgery expensive?

The cost of your augmentation will vary depending on if you choose a saline or silicone filled breast implant. Saline implants are less expensive than silicone filled implants. Because we have our own surgical suite and only use local anesthesia, we typically cost less than a surgeon who performs the surgery in a hospital under general anesthesia. On average, the price is $5,000-$6,000. We will give you a price quote at your consultation.

Will I be able to breast feed after having augmentation?

Breast augmentation should not prevent you from being able to breast feed. In most cases women are able to breast feed after augmentation. This is something that you will want to discuss with us in more detail at your consultation.

Can I still have mammograms after breast augmentation?

Mammograms can be properly performed on women with breast implants. However, you must inform the mammography technologist about your implants beforehand, so that he or she conducts additional and variously angled images in order to obtain an accurate result.

Will augmentation improve the appearance of sagging breasts?

By increasing the breast size with a silicone or saline implant, the breast will be fuller. Although implants will not lift the entire breast, or correct severely sagging breasts, they can improve the overall appearance of sagging. In some cases, sagging will not be improved simply with an implant and patients will be encouraged to consider the having a breast lift.

Will my breast augmentation results look natural?

We want your breast augmentation to look as natural as possible and we do this by hiding the incisions whenever possible. Choosing an implant size and shape that fits well with your profile, choosing the ideal placement of your implant (over or under the muscle), and choosing the filler that works best with your body (saline or silicone) are all important factors. Other factors include the amount of breast tissue you have, your skin thickness, etc.

Will breast augmentation cause stretch marks?

t all depends on the qualities of your skin, most notably skin elasticity. In many women, genetics are to blame. If you have preexisting stretch marks, implants may minimize them a bit, but won't eliminate them completely. If you choose a higher cup-size, stretch marks may develop due to the quick expansion of tissue. While there is no sure way to get rid of them, there are several options to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
