Breast Augmentation Procedure and Recovery

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Patients are put into a pre-operative room where photos will be taken and the surgeon will mark the areas of the body in which the surgery will be performed. Patients are then transferred to a surgical suite where they will be sedated. The breast augmentation surgery typically takes 1-2 hours; after which the patient is put into a private post-operative room where they are monitored until discharged by the surgeon. Each case varies, but patients should plan to be here for at least 3-4 hours.

Patients will not be allowed to drive following surgery and must be in the care of a responsible adult for the first 48-hours following surgery. Patients should remain in bed for 48-hours following the breast augmentation procedure. The only exception will be for a post surgical visit the day following surgery, if required, and when patient needs to use restroom. Post surgical nausea may occur as a result of the anesthetic and/or pain medication.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Patients will be prescribed prescriptions for pain and to prevent infections. Recovery times vary but patients should not plan any activities for a few days following breast augmentation. Most patients with desk jobs are able to return to work 3-4 days post operatively. Patients with labor intensive jobs will need to take off longer. Patients should avoid lifting anything over five pounds for at least two week following surgery. Any type of high impact or upper body exercise is prohibited for a minimum of two weeks. Patients with breast implants placed under the muscle will experience an even longer recovery time.

Post surgical swelling will occur and will last for several weeks. Implants “drop” slightly into place after several weeks to months. The surgeon may recommend that a strap be place on your upper chest, under the arms to encourage “dropping” of the breast.

A complete list of pre and post operative instructions will be given to the patient at the pre operative visit. Patients will also have a pre operative phone review 1-3 days prior to the surgery. Strict adherence to the pre and post operative instructions to ensure a safe and healthy recovery.
